Plastic Surgery Prices

This fee guide sets out Dr Kumar’s starting fees for each operation, with the anaesthetist and hospital fees beside them and an indicative total, so you can see the whole cost before you book a consultation. Every patient receives a written, itemised quote after consultation.

In short: Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) has a surgical and aftercare fee from $16,000 and an indicative self-funded total from $26,000. A lower body lift starts from $25,000 (total from $35,000), and breast reduction from $14,000 (total from $18,600). When a Medicare item applies and your hospital cover includes plastic and reconstructive surgery, what you pay is usually lower.

For a full explanation of each part of the cost, see plastic surgery costs, Medicare and health funds.

Medicare and health funds

The indicative totals above are for a self-funded patient. If a Medicare item applies, Medicare contributes to the doctors’ fees. If your hospital policy also includes plastic and reconstructive surgery, your fund usually pays the hospital apart from your excess and contributes to the doctors’ fees. The nursing aftercare component is not covered by Medicare.

  • Skin removal after weight loss: items 30166, 30169, 30177 and 30179 require weight loss of at least five BMI points and weight stable for at least six months, plus each item’s own criteria. See Medicare for skin removal surgery.
  • Breast reduction: items 45520 and 45523 apply when symptoms meet the criteria. See breast reduction cost.
  • Breast implants: no Medicare item applies to implants placed only to change appearance. Implant replacement attracts items 45553 or 45554 only after a medical complication and when strict criteria are met. See implant revision cost.
  • Cosmetic surgery: Medicare does not cover surgery performed only to change appearance, and GST applies.

Common questions

How much does a tummy tuck cost in Sydney with Dr Kumar?

Dr Kumar’s surgical and aftercare fee for abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) starts from $16,000. With the anaesthetist and hospital, the indicative total for a self-funded patient starts from $26,000. If a Medicare item applies and your hospital cover includes plastic and reconstructive surgery, your out-of-pocket cost is usually lower. Your written quote after consultation gives the exact figure.

What does “from” mean?

It is the starting fee for a straightforward operation. The fee rises with the extent of surgery, its length, additional areas and the number of nights in hospital. Dr Kumar confirms the fee for your operation in a written, itemised quote after your consultation.

Do the fees include GST?

Yes. All fees shown include GST where it applies. Surgery performed only to change appearance attracts GST; surgery that meets a Medicare item does not.

Is the cost lower if I have private health insurance?

Usually. When a Medicare item applies and your hospital policy includes plastic and reconstructive surgery, your fund normally pays the hospital apart from any excess, and Medicare and your fund contribute to the doctors’ fees. Waiting periods of up to 12 months can apply. The totals on this page are for a self-funded patient.

Does Medicare cover skin removal after weight loss?

It can. Items 30166, 30169, 30177 and 30179 require weight loss of at least five BMI points, weight stable for at least six months, and the item’s own criteria. Medicare does not cover surgery performed only to change appearance.

Does Medicare cover breast implant replacement?

Only in narrow circumstances. Items 45553 and 45554 apply after a medical complication such as rupture, migration or symptomatic capsular contracture, and only when further criteria are met, for example the original implant was placed after breast cancer or for a developmental abnormality. Implants placed only to change appearance do not attract a Medicare item.

Is it cheaper to have two operations at the same time?

Each operation keeps its own surgical fee. Combining them can mean one anaesthetic and one hospital admission, but operations are combined only when it is safe for you, and Dr Kumar decides this at consultation.

What is not included in these figures?

The surgical assistant, compression garments and any pathology or imaging. These are listed on your itemised quote.
